Getting a Better Understanding of Blood Pressure
By: Guy Starbuck
Anyone who has been diagnosed with a blood pressure problem or who has someone close to them suffering from the same problem, will most likely have a lot of questions concerning the issue. Everybody has a blood pressure but not everyone bothers about it, however blood pressure is highly important to every living human being. Lack of blood pressure would mean we would die so you can imagine what happens when blood pressure is not properly balanced and becomes either too high or too low. In order to understand the nature of this problem properly, we have to try and understand the workings of blood pressure and why it is considered very important.
By definition, blood pressure can be said to be a measure of the amount of force which is utilized in order to pump blood through the body. Use the analogy of a garden hose supplying water to your garden and the pressure which the water creates on the inner walls of the garden hose. Well, this is rather similar to the kind of pressure which your blood makes while it makes its movement through the veins and arteries in your body.
Blood pressure is absolutely necessary to live. Without it, the blood would not be able to carry through our body and to all the vital organs and cells. However, blood pressure that is too high or too low causes complications.
Low blood pressure is a serious problem because it means not enough blood is getting to where it needs to go or fast enough. Think of it like your water hose if you kink it in the middle so barely any water can drop out of the end.
Low blood pressure usually results when the heart does not pump blood quickly enough through the vessels. Conditions like dizziness and fainting may occur due to this lack of proper blood flow to the brain. Other than this, the condition may also lead to organ damage or organ failure as lack of proper blood flow starves important organs of needed oxygen as well as nutrients which are required in order to function.
High blood pressure is a whole lot more common than low blood pressure and it is equally dangerous. High blood pressure makes the heart pump a whole lot harder in order to move the blood through the vessels. What this does is that it puts extra stress on the heart and may cause damage to it as well as other important organs of the body too. High blood pressure usually occurs when the arteries have been clogged usually by something such as cholesterol. Using the water hose analogy, think of a water hose which has a lot of dirt or gunk on its inner walls. A lot of pressure would then be required in order to get the water through to the other end.
With this understanding of blood pressure and how it functions , you can now see why pressure which is too high or too low can cause problems in your body. With this information you can now get a doctor to assess your blood pressure so that you know how to keep it in check and maintain a healthy range which will keep you hale and hearty for a long time to come.
